Living as a Christian
How do I tell my family I’ve become a Christian?
Tell them simply and honestly, at a good moment, in your own words. You do not need to have all the answers or to persuade anyone. You only need to say what has happened to you.
Why tell anyone?
Faith that is kept entirely secret tends to wither. Saying it aloud makes it real to you, and the people close to you will notice a change sooner or later anyway. Jesus expected his followers to be open about belonging to him.
Everyone therefore who confesses me before men, him I will also confess before my Father who is in heaven.
How to go about it
- Choose your moment. A quiet conversation with one or two people is easier than an announcement at a family gathering.
- Tell your story. Say what led you to this, what you have come to believe and what difference it has made. Nobody can argue with your own experience.
- Keep it short. You can always say more if they ask.
- Don’t preach. This is not the moment to tell them what they ought to believe.
- Admit what you don’t know. “I’m not sure, I’m still learning” is a perfectly good answer.
What to expect
Reactions vary. Some people will be pleased, some indifferent and some puzzled. Some may worry that you have joined something odd, or feel that you are judging the way they live. A few may be hostile. Most concerns fade once people see that you are still yourself, and in fact easier to live with.
Let your life do the talking
Over time, the way you live will say more than any conversation. Be patient, be kind, do your share of the washing-up.
Even so, let your light shine before men; that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
When people do ask questions, answer honestly and without heat.
But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts; and always be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, with humility and fear.
If your family is strongly opposed
For some people, especially those whose family follows another faith, becoming a Christian carries a real cost, and occasionally a risk. If that is your situation, take advice from a church leader before you say anything. You are not obliged to tell everyone at once, and it is not a failure of faith to be wise about how and when. Don’t expect them to follow straight away
It is natural to want the people you love to share what you have found. Pray for them, keep the relationship warm and leave the timing to God. Pressure usually pushes people away.
Find support
You need people who understand, particularly if those at home don’t. A church gives you that, and most have a small group where you can talk about how it is going.
